Privacy policy
Placement Genius is a placement and diagnostic testing service that schools use. It is operated by Genius Learning, Inc. (“we”). This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it, how long we keep it, and the choices families and schools have. The short version: a child's information is collected only for the school that tests the child, is used only for that school, and is never sold, used for advertising, or combined with other schools' information.
Who to contact
Genius Learning, Inc. · 303 Loganwood Ct., Joppa, MD 21085 · (443) 345-9828 · support@electivegenius.com
Parents can also contact the school that tested their child, which controls the child's records.
Children’s information
Schools use Placement Genius to test applicants and enrolled students. The school decides who is tested and owns the records. We collect children's information only on the school's behalf, under a written agreement in which the school authorizes the collection for its own educational purpose and for no other commercial purpose. Tests are taken at school, on a school device, with staff present. For an applicant, a parent or guardian signs consent with the school's admissions application and confirms a short notice before the test starts; for enrolled students, the school gives parents the notice with its enrollment or annual notices.
What we collect.
- From the school: the child's name, the grade they are applying for or are in, and the subjects to test.
- From a parent: the kind of school the child attends now, the curriculum used, any history of an IEP, 504 plan or learning support, any grade repeated or skipped, the languages used at home, the parent's name and relationship, and when the notice was read.
- From the child: their answers to test questions, whether they chose “I haven't learned this yet,” and how long each answer took.
- If the school assigns a practice plan (the Bridge): practice answers, hints requested, time taken, skills finished and check results.
We do not collect a child's email, phone number, address, photo, voice or any biometric information, and children do not create accounts. Handwritten writing samples stay on paper at the school.
How we use it. Only to score tests and produce the school's reports: a placement report for staff, a one-page summary for the family meeting, a family summary the school may share, and, if the school offers one, a skills plan. The school makes every admission and placement decision. Scoring is automatic and rule-based, and no AI service receives any child's answers, writing or name.
What we never do. Sell children's information; use it for advertising of any kind; market to families; use one school's information for another school or combine schools' information; publish case studies or quotations without written permission; or use it to train an AI model.
Who can see it. The testing school's authorized staff. Our staff only to operate, support or secure the service, with every view of a child's record logged. The service providers below, under written confidentiality and security terms. We disclose information when the law requires it.
Parents' choices. A parent can ask the school, or us, to review the child's information, to correct the parent's intake answers, to delete it, or to stop further collection, and can ask the school to assess the child another way. We act on a deletion request within 30 days of the school confirming it.
How long we keep it
- An applicant who does not enroll: deleted 12 months after the applicant was created.
- An enrolled student: deleted when the school asks, 60 days after the school marks the student as having left, 60 days after the school stops using Placement Genius, or 3 years after the last test, whichever comes first.
- Practice records: deleted with the child's test record.
- Backups: encrypted backups roll off within 35 days of a deletion.
- Staff accounts: deleted 60 days after the account is closed.
No child's record is kept indefinitely. We may keep totals that contain no information about any child (for example, the number of tests run).
Security
We keep a written information security program with a named coordinator, an annual risk assessment and annual review. Information is encrypted in transit and in backups, test links are stored only as keyed hashes, staff access is limited by role and school, and every staff view or change of a child's record is logged. If we confirm unauthorized access to a school's student information, we notify the school within 72 hours and help it notify families as the law requires.

School staff and website visitors
For school staff we keep a name, email address and sign-in records, handled by our sign-in provider, and the school's billing contacts, handled by our payment provider. This website uses no analytics and no advertising pixels. It sets only the cookies needed to keep staff signed in. If you email us, we use your message only to reply.
Do Not Track. We do not track visitors over time or across other websites, and we let no third party do so on this site, so a browser's Do Not Track signal changes nothing: there is no tracking to turn off. School staff can review and correct their account details in their account or by contacting us.
Changes
If we change how children's information is collected or used in a way that matters, we tell schools first, update the parent notice, and do not apply the change to information already collected without the authorization the law requires. The date at the top shows the latest version.
